Yo Gabba Gabba: I'm Not Drinking the Koolaid.

Okay, guys. I admit it. I'm still relatively new to this whole parenting thing, and so may not fully appreciate the wonder that is a television show that holds a rug rat's interest for a whole thirty minutes. But Yo Gabba Gabba? Creeps me the heck out.

I mean, dudes, those characters are scary. Just look at 'em:

Tell me how Muno, the six-foot tall dildo, is supposed to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside? If you ask me, Brobee looks like something straight out of a technicolor nightmare, as does Toodee. The only one who gets any cute points at all, in my humble opinion, is Foofa, and from what I've seen, she doesn't get as much screen time as some of the others.

And as for DJ Lance? Well, picking on him is just too easy. So I won't. Besides, you've got to respect a grown man who isn't afraid to run around in an orange jumpsuit.

Now, I've heard that the music is what makes the show so attractive to young and old alike, but for the most part, the songs they sing make me want to shoot myself in the ear so I never have to hear them again. Especially this one:

After I watch this, there's no party in my tummy. Maybe a little vomit in my mouth, but that's not the same thing. And sure, it is pretty catchy (I'm sure I'll be singing it until I want to bash my head in), but that's not always a good thing.

Nope, for shows featuring culturally relevant music, I think my house is going to rely on good old Sesame Street.

How can you not laugh at that?

I'm sure I've outraged a good number of you (this Yo Gabba Gabba thing seems to have achieved crazy cult status), and maybe have even tempted a few of you to hit the un-follow button, but I hope we can still be friends.

Who knows. Maybe a few months from now, someone will have forced the magic koolaid down my throat, and I'll be wanting Muno to be my daughter's first boyfriend. But for now? I'd like to keep them as far from me and mine as humanly possible.

I won't lose my official Mommy Card for that, will I?

  1. Muno(I had no idea that's how you spell his name), does completely freak me out. But, we watch it here. I actually have a line in my post for tomorrow saying why. :)

But, really, it's a freaky show.

I saw a commercial for it and celebrities were talking about being on it and one said, "It's even better than hosting SNL." I laughed so hard!

  2. I use to hate the show, but have let my 2 year old watch it a few times lately! She just loves to sing the wiggle, wiggle song. It is to cute. I will admit that the show is very strange but she really seems to like it now that she is older!

  3. lol that Sesame Street clip made me laugh. Too cute! I happen to know someone who at least at one point was INSIDE of the pink costume for a job...I also happen to know one of the choreographers for the show. I'm not proud of this fact. But the choreographer was a pretty awesome lady with twins.

  4. Still laughing at "six foot tall dildo."
You are hilarious and spot on.
I loved this show when it first came out, my oldest was two, she loved it. Now she's almost five-and luckily, all of us are over it. I swear, I get panic attacks when I hear one of those damn songs.

    Great post, love!

  5. Holy cow! Just when I thought Barney and Tele-Tubbies were the worst we could do. I'm totally freaked out by those things...

  6. I think it is interesting that even the little ones (who of course should never watch TV), have opinions about what is on the TV. Corinne could care less about Yo Gabba Gabba, but LOVES, yes LOVES, LazyTown. The party in my tummy song gets stuck in my head just from the teaser, it is catchy ;)

  7. OMG that is so freakin hilarious! Bjorn was watching that with me and he was trying to strum along with "Na-na-na-na-na-na-na N". LOVE it! (And if they pull your Mommy card, I know a guy who specializes in fake ID's. I;ll pull a few strings for ya.)

  8. They are definitely freaky, crazy, and weird. My husband is always like "what's wrong with these characters?!?" I have a feeling that I'll end up watching it, sadly, though, when my little one gets a bit older.

  10. Yo Gabba Gabba is incredibly creepy.

Unfortunately my daughter loves that show. *Shudders*

  11. We don't typically watch "Yo" here, although my daughter does watch it at my parents' house sometimes. Anyhew, I called her and my son over to watch both of the video clips you posted. My son was delighted with the Yo clip but had no interest in the Sesame Street one. My daughter says she likes the Yo one better, too. So there's my market analysis for you.

  12. One more thing... Have you ever seen Wonder Showzen? It looks VERY similar to Yo Gabba Gabba, but it came first and is intended for adults. It is hilarious, but super disturbing. One of the weekly features is "Beat Kids" Complete with a beat kids song. It is kids on the beat doing interviews.

  13. Me? I am just glad that we don't have TV channels, so my kids have never seen it!!

  14. This show totally gives me the heebie jeebies! So does the Wiggles. And Oswald. Hmmm, maybe I need to turn off Nick Jr. once in a while. ;-)

  15. Some kid's shows have always been weird. Does anyone remember Pee Wee's Playhouse? Coo-koo stuff.

  16. Um... Yo Gabba Gabba is like, the best show ever. I mean, the Shins have been on, Mates of State, Biz Markie... and coming soon? Sarah Silverman.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. Bea loves it too... she watches it when she's sick or cranky and she totally zones out.

    Did I just admit that?

  17. By the way, Ricky Gervais? Brilliant.

  18. Not a fan of Yo Gabba Gabba either. Seriously creepy. We stick to good ole PBS shows around here. New Friday follower.

  19. LOL, great post. Nope not a fan here and that song "party in my tummy", always makes me think of the 80's song "party in my pants". It's not similar at all, but I dunno.

  20. Just wait till you have a 6-yr old. I know it's light years away, but everything changes. Even though it's annoying as heck to a parent, it's actually helped LC understand a few things that are relevant in kindergarten... recycling, not littering, eating vegetables, not hitting friends, etc. The repetition works to get him to remember it. I'll take whatever works. If it means DJ Lance in a furry hat and orange jumpsuit, then so be it. :) Plus, the characters look like kindergarten drawings, so they seem to relate.

  21. That guy in the orange jumpsuit? Just...wow. I had no idea.
