Can a Mama Get Some Help?

My little girl is upstairs right now, crying as if her heart is breaking. Not cute little wails, oh no. These are full-on screams.

Even worse? Every once in a while, she lets out a chorus of "ma ma ma ma ma MA!" I know she supposedly doesn't know what she's saying, but that doesn't do my heart any good.

There's nothing wrong, really. She's clean, she's dry, she has a full tummy. She just wants her mommy. Has wanted her mommy for most of the last 48 hours. She's teething or something, I don't know. All I know is that my back hurts, my head hurts, I have a crick in my neck, a slobbery shoulder and a shirt polka dotted with various baby stains.

I've rocked her, sang her songs, read her books, played with her, tickled her, let her sleep on my chest. She's sucked on ice cubes, gnawed on teething rings and practically eaten a hole in my shirt.

Nothing helps. She's miserable, I'm miserable, and now, because you're reading this, you're probably a little more miserable, too.

The point? Teething sucks. Sucks donkey kong. And I'm out of ideas.

So, internet, I'm asking you. Is there anything I can do to help her? Other than feed her (and myself) whiskey? I could use a little help...before I start crying for my mommy.

  1. Baby Tylenol. If she still cries after that, it may not be teeth. It might just be that she's testing you, to see if you'll give in to her every cry. We went through the same thing with our kiddo was about 5 months. After a few miserable nights, we finally let him cry (checking on him every few minutes). After 3 more nights, he was back to sleeping soundly. Good luck!

  2. Some babies respond well to baby Tylenol, and some prefer baby Motrin. If Tylenol doesn't work, give the Motrin a shot.

Also, have you tried massaging her gums? With your finger or a wet washcloth. (Frozen washcloths are good treats, too.) Apply pretty good pressure and rub away.

If none of that works, go with the whiskey. :o)

  3. When my kids were babies, we'd take a nice drive and listen to soothing music. Well, I responded well to driving around aimlessly, anyway, even if they didn't right away. Plus you can drown them out with the radio! What?

  4. yes, I have to agree with the baby tylenol sentiment. I really hope it works for you, it's no fun having a clingy baby, but it will pass and all will go back to normal. Best of luck

  5. I also have to agree with the baby tylenol. When in doubt, drug them. They'll probably feel better and U will too. If that doesn't work, try the whiskey. It might shut them up right?

  6. I have to agree with the drugs it will ease her pain a bit and you might want to take something for the headache you are bound to be nursing!!

It's a horrible stage so take heart that there are thousands of mums out there that know what you are going through!!

    Good luck!

  7. Thanks, everybody. We did give her some Tylenol and she went to sleep... this morning she seemed better. Temporarily. Phew.

  8. I've got nothing. I just hope you figure something out that works soon.

  9. My pediatrician used to tell me to rub a little children's benadryl on my baby's gums while he was teething because I guess their gums can be itchy when the teeth cut through. It seemed to help in a pinch! Honestly though, if I ever have another baby, I'll be rubbing scotch on his gums. That's what my mom did with me and I don't know why I didn't listen. Good luck!

  10. I have no advice. All I can give is a big Mama internet hug and toast you with a glass of vodka. It's 5 o'clock somewhere. And you've earned it!!

  11. Frozen banana helps. Rubbing alcohol is a valid treatment.

  12. Another vote for Baby Tylenol. I tried other stuff too, but nothing else did anything. The Baby Orajel just made my baby cry worse because the numbing felt weird to her.

I did the gum massage thing too with one of those baby toothbrush things that you put on your finger. She enjoyed gnawing on that.

Good luck, and hope both of you get some relief soon!

Thanks for your SITS visit to lemonologie!

  13. Alternting tylenol and ibuprofren (motrin) seems to help, I've also given my kids a baby toothbrush to chew on as well (once they were old enough to not choke themselves with it). I'm glad that she finally calmed down.

You'd think it gets easier when they start talking, but I have a nearly 6 YO and it doesn't. ;)

  15. I couldn't take the sound of a baby crying. It's almost difficult for me to read about a baby crying.

We did the Orajel and frozen teething things and baby Tylenol when my baby was a literal baby. I think that all just made the grown-ups feel better.

The bummer is that eventually they get all 20 teeth, they still cry and there's nothing to blame it on!
